The Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center Marathon Training Program has helped thousands of people prepare for marathons. The program is designed to help individuals professionally prepare for one of the ultimate tests of human endurance- the marathon. It is also designed to assist those who aspire to run a marathon in the future but are preparing for a half-marathon. This year’s training program begins July 28th, 2008.
This program centers on a few simple training concepts: (1) A gradual increase in long run mileage, (2) modest weekly mileage totals, and (3) Injury prevention strategies. The biggest challenge of a marathon is NOT the ability to finish the race, but rather the task of making it to the starting line both rested and healthy.
Runners of all abilities are encouraged to participate, whether they are a marathon rookie or an established marathoner looking to improve on a past performance. The 20-week program begins in late July, primarily preparing individuals for the Dallas White Rock in early December; however the Las Vegas or Honolulu Marathons typically fall on the same date. All participants should have running base of 12 miles per week for the Marathon Program, and 6 miles per week for the Half-Marathon Program before the start of the program. In addition, participants must be willing to commit 3-7 hrs to training per week.
